I was disputing the need to switch from your
typical Macintosh or Windows environment to Linux unless you fit
one of those esoteric needs.

I have found that Linux can serve the everyday needs of users switching from Mac and Windows environments. Our Sales/CSR needs are web browsing, e-mail, and light word processing/spreadsheet use. The applications available on Linux for those tasks are as good if not better than Windows counterparts in our tests.

Linux provides many advantages over Mac OS 9.x or Windows. Mac OS X is too expensive for this application. Hardware to run OS X instead of the systems we purchased would have cost twice as much.

The esoteric stuff I leave to IRIX or QNX, Linux helps us run our business.
