Dear list,

it might be in your interest, that I will release the source-patch files for

the FreeBSD port 7.4.27 / 7.4.30 within the next weeks, without any GPL/LGPL
restrictions (mostly in the interest of FreeBSD though)

I hope that more people will come and participate, making a "release"-worth
release of at least the last existing versions of SAPDB 7.4 for FreeBSD.

Current FreeBSD advantages over Linux are, that FreeBSD already HAS native
kernel-threads, while Linux is still awaiting the 2.6 series of its kernel.
Maybe that could even become a performance advantage ?

The chance for an official port of (at least) SAPDB is ZERO. This is mainly,

because SAP has no need for the FreeBSD within its commercial products like
R3, thus not supporting FreeBSD in its DBMS (which make sense from the
economical point of view).

MySQL support for FreeBSD was not the best at all, till now. (Mostly using
LinuxThreads is not that native), but I at least it could be compiled and
used.

I think, that the best way, to achieve a rock-stable BSD-Port is
voluntariness, even though 90% of the work is done, there are still some
problems left, that one person (me), can not fix alone and adapt every three
month to the next release.

Sorrowly savannah.gnu.org is currently down, so I was not able to share the
latest devtools with the required BSD patches, required to build SAPDB
without problems.

Furthermore I hope, that I can complete a FreeBSD-Port-Package within this
year, available for FreeBSD 5.2 then (any info and help welcome).

The client library questions should be clarified then too, I think.

Kind regards

Kai
