As we are SAP customer I can tell you only about my experiences under SAP.

If you read the mailing list archive you'll find a lot of information.
Our DB: ~ 400 GB
~ 500 - 600 users concurrent
System is very stable, we have DB uptimes of > 3 months.
> 6. Is it easy to schedule backups in the MAXDB environment?
Not more difficult than in other DBs. You could set up a one liner and
schedule it via cron p. ex.
# dbmcli -u <logon-data> -uUTL -c backup_start <device>
