For what it's worth, I've been concerned about the same things you have. The community around Mayan seems to be very quiet. Now, this could be because the software just works, but it also could mean lack of interest from either the community, the original developer, or both. Or, perhaps more likely, it could mean the author has other things to do...the software works well enough for him and he leaves it to the rest of us to pick up the torch.
If it's not the later....well, I have almost 15 years of experience using open source software, and a safe sign of project health has always been community involvement and mailing list chatter. I mean no offence to the authors and am impressed by the work they've done.
