I suspect that at some point I was seeing some harmless warning
messages that I wanted to avoid.

I understand.  :-) The persistence engine needs work in M2 but it is a
lot easier to script and reuse.  The UI is also a lot prettier.  I
must mention that it is slow to start up because of various overheads
likely from wxPython, Envisage etc.
