When you are running from IPython you should comment out the last line of that example. mlab.show() is engineered to work around this issue by detecting that IPython is there, and not starting the mainloop. I would like to stress that these changes are changes in IPython, not Mayavi, and that they apply to any GUI program, not only to Mayavi.
