So...that would be

570 if ( $self->debug and $status != OK and $status != DECLINED )

"OK" is exported by Maypole::Constants, so perhaps your authenticate()
routine is returning the string "OK" by accident?  Maybe
you need to explicitly use Maypole::Constants in the module
that has authenticate()?

Sounds like perhaps Maypole::Constants aren't being exported 
by default into some namespaces where they used to be.
