When one copies something onto a vfat partition the fact that vfat doesn`t support UNIX permissions rises and bites as hell.
Once you select and copy a dir subtree it fails on the topmost directory because "cannot change persmissions for ...".
This very feature makes mc painful, very painful to use with vfat, and cp -R is used to circumvent that.

I am not using the newest mc, but isnt there a switch 'Preserve Attributes' used just for that purpose?
