Instructional Lab Manager (Staff Research Associate II) DESCRIPTION. The Physics Department seeks a lab manager to develop, support, and improve the physics advanced instructional laboratories. RESPONSIBILITIES. Develop new lab exercises by consulting faculty and adapting current research techniques to an instructional setting. For example, one new lab exercise will be designed to track point sources of light such as quantum dots and noble metal nanoparticles. The candidate will need to survey the particle tracking literature, and then learn from a research lab how to process information from a frame grabber board and extract particle centroids and trajectories. The data will be acquired using a dark field microscope and a high frame rate camera. The candidate will also modify existing lab exercises and perform maintenance and upgrading of equipment and computers used in instructional labs. REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS. Working knowledge of and laboratory experience in undergraduate-level physics, astrophysics, chemistry, engineering, and/or biology. Technical knowledge of electrical equipment commonly used in physics instructional labs, such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, and counters. Computer skills should include hardware and software installation and maintenance, data acquisition, and data analysis. Familiarity with algorithm development in Matlab. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including strong writing skills. Preferred: Programming in C++ and LabView, as well as experience with light microscopy, biological sample preparation, and alignment of optical systems. OTHER. Part-time appointment (percentage flexible). Starting hourly minimum $16.52. Open until filled; preferred start date November 14, 2005. Position ends July 30, 2006.
