Are you interested in developing some practical research skills?
Then Sociology 107A may be just the course for you.

This course is a comprehensive training program for undergraduate
students interested in field research using the participant
observation method.  Students will be trained as researchers in the
Center for Urban Ethnography's annual Bay Area Study.  Students will
be required to enroll in a year-long course, Soc 107A and 107B (9
units total).  Sociology 107A is intended to give the student both
substantive background and practical training on the participant
observation method and the topic of the Bay Area Study, which is
Social Services in the Bay Area.  In Sociology 107B students will be
primarily conducting the research and entering the data on a
computer-assisted program, which will be housed in the UC DATA
archives at the Survey Research Center for public use.

2.      FemSex De-Cal Course

Looking for 3 units and an amazing and empowering experience??

Female Sexuality (FemSex) is a De-Cal (a class taught by students for
students) whose roots reach all the way back to 1994. While the
course is constantly changing to adapt to the current events
constantly making their way to the fore, the original basis for the
course -- Women's Empowerment -- is still the focus.

Female Sexuality is a course designed by women for women to create a
safe environment where women can discuss various issues surrounding
sexuality, learning from the diverse viewpoints of their peers. It is
our hope that by the end of this class that people will leave the
class with a newfound sense of empowerment, and a greater
understanding of the diverse ways in which empowerment can be felt.

Topics in class cover a broad spectrum of sexuality related topics
including: anatomy and physiology, women's health, media and cultural
influence on female sexuality, ISMs, body image, contraception and
STIs, reproductive choices, solo sex, partner sex, orgasm/orgasm
inhibitors, sex work, communication and relationships, violence
against women, and women's empowerment.

TO ENROLL:
1) Attend an Information and Application Session during WEEK ONE OF
INSTRUCTION (Jan 17-20) at the Gender and Equity Resource Center at
the times the sections will be held throughout the semester as well
as every hour on the hour, on Friday the 20th (10am-4pm).

Class sections are as follows:
M/W 4-6pm: AJ & Debbie
M/W 5-7pm: Denise & Lauren
M/W 6-8pm: Alexa & Kim
M/W 7-9pm: Kristine & Sonya
T/TH 5-7pm: Laurie & Jaimini

2) Classes will begin WEEK TWO of instruction (Jan 23 - 27). If you
have been accepted into the class, you will recieve your CCN once you
have begun to attend.
3) YOU NEED ONLY APPLY ONCE. If you'd like a T/TH class, you only
need to go to one session the first week. You do not HAVE to attend
the info session for the classtime you prefer.

Fulfills a Biological Sciences Breadth Requirement
Description: Genetic discoveries have changed our lives. All are
controversial. Especially changed are human physical and mental
health, agriculture, social systems, and worldviews. Having many
DNA-sequenced genomes, including human, accelerates discovery. This
course will study the science, history, and philosophical
implications behind past discoveries and will contemplate future
genetic revolutions.

4.        PH 98/198 - Access to Essential Medicines

Course Description: The astounding mortality rates for HIV/AIDS in
the developing world, despite the demonstrated life-saving capacity
of antiretroviral therapies, have focused international attention on
the issue of access to medicines. Indeed, as of late 2003, more than
ninety-eight percent of Africans affected by AIDS and more than
ninety-three percent of those in "urgent need" worldwide lacked
access to anti-retroviral drug treatment (ARVs). But the problem is
not limited to HIV/AIDS: one-third of the world's population lacks
regular access to essential medicines. This course will introduce
students to obstacles to essential medicine access in developing
world nations and the role of intellectual property policies and
universities in solving these problems. Some topics that we will
cover include the basics of intellectual property, drug development
and delivery, and proposed solutions to the access gap.

Laboratory Assistant Positions

Our laboratory is seeking dynamic individuals for both part-time and
full time Laboratory
Assistant positions, including summer internships.

Our research program focuses on elucidating biological mechanisms
that promote the development and
regression of atherosclerosis and its many complications. To this
end, we develop and study
genetically engineered mouse models of coronary heart disease.

The positions we have to offer involve working with genetically
engineered mice by assessing their
blood lipid and protein levels, and by performing histological
analyses of atherosclerotic plaques
in their arteries and organs.

Previous laboratory experience is a plus. Preference will be given to
individuals with skills in
techniques that include; western blots, lipid analysis, histology,
immunohistochemistry,
bioinformatics, and experience with rodent dissection.
