The course has both academic and hands-on components: through weekly readings, seminars, guest speakers, student presentations and films, we will seek an intellectual understanding of the issues; experiential knowledge will come through a placement at a Bay Area public service agency, and through participation in a weekend service project. Additionally, there will be a focus on reflection. The Cal Undergraduate Public Health Coalition (UPHC) invites you to participate in our de-cal class: A Survey of Indigenous Health in the Amazon. Through guest lectures, readings, and discussions revolving around a broad range of disciplines, students will gain insider knowledge and learn how to take action to protect the health and livelihoods of indigenous groups in the region. Since Cal UPHC is currently working with two indigenous Shuar communities, our de-cal will draw upon many examples from Ecuador. We will also provide students with comparative information about other indigenous communities in the Amazon and Latin America. In fact, if you choose to take this course for 2 units*, you will be given the opportunity to participate in our collaborative health and environment projects with these indigenous Amazonian communities=F3aimed at improving the health of the Shuar and their neighbors. *Logistical Information* This course can be taken for 1 or 2 units. The 1 unit section is open to 40 students and will consist primarily of guest lectures from top professors in different graduate school departments as well as other activities. As the course incorporates themes from almost all major disciplines, students from all majors are encouraged to take this class - it is not limited to public health students. The 2 unit section will focus specifically on the Cal Undergraduate Public Health Coalition projects with two Shuar communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Some of our projects address malnutrition, oil politics, reforestation, and other health issues. Due to the nature of our projects, we must limit the 2 unit section to 15 motivated students who really want to make a difference in the lives of indigenous peoples in the Amazon.
