SPRING 2006 DIVERSITY RESEARCH SEMINARS FOR UNDERGRADUATES Application Deadline: Monday January 30 (details on how to apply below) The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for Berkeley undergraduates to participate in an action research seminar designed to enhance the campus's understanding of issues of diversity and inclusion. This seminar will be taught by Berkeley faculty in collaboration with staff in campus units working to promote a climate of inclusion on the Berkeley campus and beyond. Each two-unit seminar will be limited to 12 students. Either individually or in teams, students will tackle one or more research questions on a diversity-related topic described below. The research findings will be presented to Chancellor Birgeneau, senior campus administrators, and other campus and community stakeholders at the end of the semester and will help inform campus policy decisions and initiatives regarding diversity and inclusion. Education 198: Exploring Transfer Student Success Co-Instructors: Professor Caroline Kane, MCB; Director Marsha Jaeger, Center for Educational Partnerships; Director Eva Rivas, Transfer, Re-entry and Student Parent Center. Time: Wednesday 5-6:30 PM (first class meets on January 25) Location: 123 Dwinelle Number of Units: 2 Course Enrollment: 12 Requirements: Students must have completed a minimum of 60 units. Course Description: According to The California Master Plan for Higher Education, the University of California system is required to establish "a lower division to upper division [student] ratio of 40:60 to provide transfer opportunities for Community College students, and eligible California Community College transfer students are to be given priority in the admissions process." This seminar will examine a set of questions concerning transfer student success at Berkeley. What types of preparation maximize transfer student success? What structural road blocks and resources exist at the institutional level to impact such success? How do transfer students navigate the system most effectively? Are there differences between how various sub-populations within the transfer community successfully acclimate? In the first part of the course, students will learn appropriate research approaches and methodologies and become conversant with the literature on transfer student success. In the second part of the course, students will divide into three teams and conduct research on a specific topic. Student final reports will include policy, academic and programmatic recommendations designed to help the Berkeley campus create a diverse student body and ensure its success. ELIGIBILITY: Upper division students in any major are invited to apply. Transfer students and students who applied for but did not receive an award from an undergraduate research program such as the McNair, Haas, Biology Fellows or Miller Scholar Programs are especially encouraged to submit an application.
