Dear MCB Students,

Here are two important items from the MCB UAO:

********************************
********************************
1. SIGN UP FOR MCB POSTER SESSION, 4/21/2006, 3-5 pm

Any MCB undergraduate can participate in the poster session. Read on.

Sign up for Spring 2006 Honors Presentations
Deadline - Friday, March 24, 2006

Presenting your research in an approved forum is a necessary step in
order to received departmental honors upon graduation from MCB.
During the spring, the MCB department offers two types of events in
which students present their honors research. Students either choose
to participate in the poster session, which is open to all MCB
undergraduates, or ask to be considered for one of the five symposia.
(If your abstract is not chosen, you would then be expected to
present a poster on April 21st.) The deadline to sign up is Friday,
March 24, 2006. Click here for the link
http://mcb2.berkeley.edu/undergrad/presentation.html.

Guidelines for participating in one of the symposia:

Selection
Due to time limitations, a selection process based on GPA and
research abstracts is used to keep each symposium to two hours in
length. In general, approximately ten students are selected for each
symposium.

Presentations
Students present their research using overheads, powerpoint or slides
and field questions from the faculty, lab teams, family, and peers in
the audience. Each presentation is usually seven to ten minutes in
length, depending on how many participants must be accommodated.

Suggested Components
Your primary source for guidance on the content of your presentation
is your lab cadre. Rehearse (and time) your presentation at least
once in front of your lab mentor and colleagues.
o Background and Introduction. This provides the audience with
an understanding of the research problem or question and how this
research will add new information in the field.
o Methodology. Discuss the techniques utilized in this research project.
o Results
o Conclusion and Future Directions
o Acknowledgements. Thank the people who have contributed to
the success of your project.

NOTE TO BMB HONORS STUDENTS: BMB students wishing to be considered
for one of the divisional awards, given during the commencement
ceremony, must sign up for the symposium (not the poster session),
and complete their thesis to be submitted during the week of the
symposium.

Poster Guidelines

Your project will be on a table and therefore must be
**FREE-STANDING**. Free-standing display boards are available at most
office supply stores (Staples, Radston's, Office Max) for under $10.
The dimensions must not exceed 48" in width.

You can find detailed information about creating a poster on our web
site,
http://mcb.berkeley.edu/undergrad/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=62.
Additionally, we will send out an email about a workshop on creating
posters later in the semester.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

2. AUDITIONS - COMMENCEMENT STUDENT SPEAKER

Each spring, the MCB Department holds auditions for the undergraduate
Commencement speaker. The audition is open to all MCB seniors
participating in Commencement. At the audition, speakers stand before
an audience of MCB peers, staff, and faculty to present their own
Commencement speech. After hearing all the speeches, the audience
convenes to compare notes and select the person who will best
represent the graduating class at Commencement.

Selection Criteria

The speeches will be evaluated on the following:

Content

The content should be entertaining, meaningful, and easy to follow.
It should appeal to all MCB students regardless of emphasis, as well
as to families and faculty. Successful speeches of past years have
focused on the MCB, rather than Berkeley, experience.

Presentation

The delivery should be engaging and appropriate to the occasion. The
speaker should be easy to hear and understand, as well as rehearsed
and comfortable speaking in front of very large audiences.

Length

The actual speech cannot be longer than five minutes to the second.

To Audition

Sign up to audition by bringing a copy of your speech to the MCB
Undergraduate Affairs Office (2083 VLSB) by Thursday, April 27 at 3
PM. Your audition time will be confirmed via e-mail.

Auditions will be held on

Tuesday, May 2, 2006 from 3:30-5 pm in 2040 VLSB

To Judge

Any graduating senior can attend the audition and help select the
speaker. No prior registration is needed, but you must attend
theentire audition.
