Looking for hands-on experience with cutting edge techniques? Hoping to earn a strong recommendation from a well-respected laboratory in the nation's top Neuroscience program?
Here's your chance. Our laboratory is conveniently located just a bike-ride away from Berkeley campus, in Emeryville at the Ernest Gallo Clinical Research Center, associated with UCSF. I am a graduate student at UCSF, with 8 years of experience with science mentorship. I am looking for a responsible, independent, curious volunteer to help me with my experiments. In return, I will offer guidance, mentorship, the opportunity to learn new techniques, and potentially, an opportunity to design and run your own experiments, and/or the opportunity to co-author an abstract or publication. My expectations: -Above all, I expect a volunteer to be reliable and attentive. -A minimum of 10 hours a week during the school year, and 15-30 hours a week in the summer. -Because training takes a long time (several months) I hope to have a volunteer that has the availability of at least 1 year to apply these valuable skills. -Have the ability to learn a task and then apply it independently. -Have an interest in the brain, behavior, and neurons. What you can expect: -To start work between July 15-August 1. -Flexibility, both in what you do, and when you do it, though if you commit to a certain time, I do expect you to be there. -This experiment involves the surgical implantation of electrodes into the brain. You do not have to perform surgeries, though if you wish to, you will have the opportunity to learn this technique. -We will be recording from neurons in the amygdala of awake behaving rats while they are learning a behavioral paradigm that models drug addiction relapse. -You may be asked to work the occasional weekend, or evening, but our lab is full of wonderful, fun people who are very helpful resources. -Initially, you will have to do some data analysis (no experience necessary, but any experience would help you), and some animal handling. -These experiments are very important, and if you are a good volunteer, you can count on being a co-author on an abstract, or perhaps more. This will be great for your c.v. If you are interested, please reply to me with an email stating your motivation for volunteering for this project, your (tentative) availability, and attach your resume or c.v. (which should include any relevant experience, coursework, your GPA, and at least two references, though more are better).
