****************************************************** ****************************************************** NIC-funded Program Project Structural Cell Biology of DNA Repair Machines The Expression and Molecular Biology (EMB) Core at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab is looking for TWO volunteer students! If you are interested in participating in a multi-institutional research program project in DNA repair, and get hands-on research experience at the top-rated national institute, please complete the attached application form, and send a copy of your current resume. Please note that applications will be accepted through August 10. Failure of providing the requested information or applications submiited after the deadline will not be considered. Promising candidates will be notified by email if an interview is to be arranged. The interview will take place between August 1 and August 10. When the position is offered, you need to pay a second visit to LBNL on August 11 or August 14 to fill out the proper paperwork which will then be processed by Human Resources during the weeks of August 15-25. The actual lab will begin as school instruction begins on Monday, August 28, 2006. Please see the attached information below for program details and for position qualificaiton and requirement. Volunteer Students Wanted!!! LBNL EMB Core Research Program 2006-2007 The Expression and Molecular Biology (EMB) Core is a research and support core facilityof the NCI-funded, multi-institutional, and multi-investigator program project, Cell and Structural Biology of DNA Repair Machines (SBDR), led by Drs.John Tainer and Pricilla Cooper centered at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The main focus at the EMB Core is to generate recombinant expression constructs of DNA repair proteins and/or protein complexes, to optimize soluble expression of target protein and/or protein complexes in bacteria or insect cells, to purify the recombinant proteins for subsequent structural studies by protein X-ray crystallography (PX) or small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), as well as to investigate protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions in repair of DNA damage. Volunteers will: Be involved in the research projects in collaborations with SBDR member labs Participate in regular lab meetings Be trained in basic molecular cloning techniques, including sequence analysis, primer design, PCR, restriction mapping, and agarose gel electrophoresis; aseptic techniques in microbiology and cell cultures; and biochemical skills in protein expression, analysis, purification, and protein interactions using protein gel electrophoresis, Western blotting and column chromatography Be trained in data analysis, organization and presentations Obtain research credits during school year Perform honors thesis research projects during the senior year QUALIFICATIONS: Essential Undergraduate students major in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related fields Have taken math, basic chemistry (with lab) and biology (with lab). Must be organized, responsible, focused, capable of multi-tasking, keep detail lab notes, and have good communication (written and verbal) skills Minimum 12 hours per week, and at least a full year commitment Preferred Junior preferred; sophomore encouraged; prior experience not required Require prior lab experience for senior students For more information about the SBDR program, please visit <http://www.sbdr.lbl.gov>http://www.sbdr.lbl.gov ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ************************************************************ POSITION AVAILABLE Wanted Bright and motivated students interested in lab research Volunteer position in the Children's Environmental Health Lab at the School of Public Health, UC Berkeley is available to undergraduate students interested in molecular epidemiology, immunology, genetics and human studies. Lab is located off Campus, the UC Berkeley Marchant building, corner of Ashby and San Pablo and has a plentiful parking space and reasonably good public transportation to the main Campus. Previous lab experience as a work study student or volunteer a plus. We will train you in modern techniques used to study effects of the environment on human populations and mechanisms of cancer and other diseases. Duties of the position include helping with processing and banking samples from molecular epidemiological projects, participating in cytogenetic analysis and ongoing experiments, data entry and analysis of the data, literature search. Must be motivated and computer literate with good communication skills and grades.Working knowledge of Dreamweaver for Website update (http://ehs.sph.berkeley.edu/holland/), extra plus. We would prefer second or third year students to give them enough time for training, independent projects and finally Honors project. A possibility of part-time paid position may be considered for volunteers with excellent performance.
