The inaugural event will be held at Monterey Hill restaurant in Monterey Park, CA (Los Angeles area) during the Cal winter break from 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. It will feature a free gourmet dinner, multimedia lecture, fun, mentoring, and networking for current Cal pre-medical and pre-pharmacy students. Dr. David Lieu (Cal chemistry and MBA alumnus, physician, and UCLA clinical faculty member) will host the event and present a multimedia lecture entitled “The Road to Become a Physician: A View from the Baby Boomer Generation.” Students will learn what Cal was like in the 1970s, listen to music from that era, relive the most important events of the Baby Boomer generation, understand why medical school was the goal of so many students, and learn about current medical school admission requirements, costs, curriculum, the national internship and residency match, specialization, and medical practice. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. But most of all, it will make you think. After the lecture and dinner, students will have an opportunity to network with practicing physicians and pharmacists attending the event. The event is free for current Cal students but registration is required. Space is limited and the deadline to register is January 4, 2015. To RSVP, please visit the San Gabriel Valley Cal Alumni Club homepage and click on Golden Bears in Golden Years in the event pages section: http://my.berkeley.edu/site/Clubs?club_id=1162&pg=main You can go directly to the event page for Golden Bears in Golden Years at: http://my.berkeley.edu/site/Clubs?club_id=1162&sid=22771&pg=event You can go directly to the EventBrite sign-up page for the event at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/golden-bears-in-golden-years-tickets-13939195509 Join us for an exciting evening of delicious food, fun, camaraderie, friendship, and mentoring that shows why Berkeley is and always will be the greatest public university in the world! Dr. David Lieu practices medicine in Alhambra, CA. He is a cytopathologist and operates a fine-needle aspiration clinic. He specializes in performing ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration/core-needle biopsy of masses and microscopic examination of pathology slides to diagnose cancer. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~** *US Teaching Assistantship Austria 2015-16* Since 1962, the US Teaching Assistantship Program in Austria has provided US college and university graduates with opportunities to work at secondary schools throughout Austria as teaching assistants. You can find more information about the program, including how to apply, on our new website http://www.usta-austria.at/ Only online applications will be accepted. *Please note that the application deadline for the program year 2015-16 is January 15, 2015.* The following link directs you to our website, where you can find the *program description* and download an *informative flyer* about the program for 2015-16: https://www.usta-austria.at/site/programdescription/program The flyer can then which can be posted or distributed to interested students, either electronically or in paper copy. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Women’s affairs (BMBF) finances this program, which is administered by the *Austrian-American Educational Commission* (Fulbright Commission). While the participants in this program contribute to the Fulbright goal of promoting mutual understanding, *this is not a Fulbright grant program*. Under the guidance of one or more scientific mentors, each Summer Scholar is responsible for his or her own research project in such areas as tissue engineering, genetic engineering, and science policy. The Summer Scholars Program emphasizes development of not only laboratory skills but also communication skills as well. Students participating in the program will hone their writing skills via periodic reports, which are designed to emulate text scientists commonly must produce. Additionally, a poster presentation at a SRF-sponsored conference at the end of the summer will provide students with an opportunity to present their results to scientists from other research institutions. - Paid positions are available at such world-renowned research institutions as: - Buck Institute for Research on Aging - Harvard Stem Cell Institute/Harvard School of Medicine - Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute - Scripps Research Institute, SRF Research Center - SRF Research Center - Stanford University - Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine The online application and full descriptions of each research project can be found at www.sens.org/2015-summer-scholars. Applications will be accepted until 12 pm PST February 2, 2015. A downloadable program flyer is available at www.sens.org/2015-summer-scholars/flyer. Please share the flyer and/or email with your students or other departments who you think would be interested in this research opportunity. If requested, a low resolution version that is more amenable to posting can be provided. If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact me at greg.c...@sens.org *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~** *Graduate School Life Science Munich* The Graduate School Life Science Munich (LSM) is part of the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmacy of the Ludwig-Maximilans-University (LMU) of Munich.
