Universities Allied for Essential Medicines Announcements

Interested in global health, patent law, health policy and advocacy, or
medicine? Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is a
student-led organization that works in cooperation with top experts in
international medicine access, campus technology transfer offices, and
faculty members in order to change the conversation about current research,
patenting, and licensing policies of academic institutions to ensure that
low-income countries have access to essential medicines.

We have two exciting announcements to make!

1. *Board applications for next semester: they will be due on Monday,
April 25*, at midnight. Everyone is welcome to apply as long as you
demonstrate your interest in UAEM issues. Even if you weren't super
involved this semester, anyone is welcome! More information and the
application can be found here:
http://uaem.berkeley.edu/executive-board-application/

2. Our next meeting will feature *Anthony Di Franco, the founder of
the Open Insulin Project.*

In 2014, the CDC estimated that 29 millions adults in the US live with
diabetes. Though diabetes is easily manageable with insulin, the cost of
insulin is extremely high, with many still paying hundreds of dollars each
month even with insurance. Anthony and his team of volunteers are a group
of biohackers that are working on newer, simpler, cheaper, and less
complicated ways of making insulin to increase access to insulin.

*The next meeting will be on April 25 at 7pm tentatively scheduled to occur
in 4 Evans. *

Feel free to bring any guests; all are invited. For more info about the
Open Insulin Project, visit their website at http://openinsulin.org/

Rhetoric 2: Public Speaking, Summer 2016 course
*Attention Pre-Pharm Students!* This summer Rhetoric is offering a public
speaking course that would fulfil a prerequisite for Pharmacy School. See
details below:

Rhetoric 2
Public Speaking, Confronting Arguments: Speech in Public
Monday/Wednesday/Friday 12:00 -2:30
Session D

This course insists that we should argue. Moreover, it contends that every
interaction between people is a confrontation, from the small talk at the
drugstore to televised political debates. We will, first, seek to
understand how arguments are traditionally understood and why it behooves
us to learn to speak and listen in such a fashion. Thereafter, we will
question a tradition of cooperation and ask if, indeed, a peaceful silence
befits everyone. Our third concern-which voices are silenced and which
bodies are subdued-will lead us to our fourth: how our simple, everyday
decisions and preferences constitute a confrontation. In fact, as we will
ultimately see, to be alive is to argue.

This course not only serves to introduce students to theories of modern
argumentation and political reason; it functions as an introductory public
speaking course. Students will speak four times in front of their peers
over the course of the semester and receive feedback for their efforts.
Students who seek futures in academia, business, law, politics, and/or
entertainment and hospitality industries are encouraged to take this course
for practical purposes. Of course, developing one's voice and body through
public address is beneficial to all human beings.

Kaplan Med School Insider Event

Six years ago, we premiered Kaplan's Medical School Insider (MSI) event
with one goal in mind: to connect students directly with deans of
admissions and true experts on the medical school application process so
that the questions that matter can be answered by those with the most
experience.

In the years since that first event, we've seen MSI grow in both size and
scope. Each year more and more students tune in to learn about the
latest trends
in medical school admissions. The discussion gives them a chance to peer
behind the curtain to hear what admissions committees really think about
their applications. The internet is overflowing with opinions and advice
about how to build your medical school application to increase your chances
of acceptance, but ultimately the only opinions that matter are those of
the admissions committees making the decision.

This year's MSI will happen on *Monday, May 2, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
PST.*
With a panel composed of medical school deans, admissions officers, and
pre-medical advisors, the collective expertise of the event promises to
address all of the biggest concerns for the upcoming application season,
and then some. Moreover, every student can submit questions directly during
the event to the panelists with a chance that they'll be answered live on
the air.

I certainly hope that you'll make the time to join us for this exciting and
informative event, and share this event with anyone who may benefit.

UCSF Neuro Research Opportunity

The lab of Dr. Stephen Hauser in the Department of Neurology at UCSF is
looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and organized full-time junior
researcher to assist in our aims in multiple sclerosis research. We are
involved in a very exciting study that seeks to understand the beginnings
of multiple sclerosis by studying the immune system cells of newly
diagnosed MS patients.

We are searching for a recent or graduating senior with a degree in the
biological sciences and hands-on laboratory experience. The researcher will
assist the lab with processing of human peripheral blood and cerebrospinal
fluid samples for flow cytometry and cell sorting. The sorted subsets will
be used for next generation sequencing and transcriptomics, so some
molecular biology work may be expected as well.

If interested, please submit your CV including GPA and cover letter to
Erica Eggers at erica.egg...@ucsf.edu and Natalie Pierson at
natalie.pier...@ucsf.edu. Thanks!
Research Opportunity in Scanziani Lab, UCSF
The Scanziani laboratory at UCSF is seeking an undergraduate for a
volunteer research position.

The project is focused on neural circuit mechanisms underlying visual
behaviors in mice. The student will work on training mice to perform visual
behaviors. Research will include animal handling, record keeping, and
behavioral assessments. An ideal candidate would be willing to spend at
least 12 hours a week for at least 3 months in the laboratory.

Background in neuroscience is preferred but not required.

Please contact sarah.ruediger...@ucsf.edu <sarah.ruediger...@ucsf.edu>
and/or arbora.resu...@ucsf.edu and/or pei...@ucsf.edu.

The candidate will contribute to research efforts in the lab to dissect
mechanisms of translational control using state-of-the-art molecular
biology, biochemistry, genetics (including CRISPR/Cas9), and
high-throughput-sequencing-based techniques in diverse model systems. In
addition to working with other members of the lab to accelerate their
research, there will be opportunities to conduct an independent research
project. This position is ideal for a recent college graduate looking to
gain additional research experience before attending graduate school (the
current Specialist will be an author on at least two publications before
leaving to join the BBS PhD program at Harvard in the fall), though more
experienced individuals are also encouraged to apply.

Summer Research Opportunity: Bluestone Lab, UCSF

We are an immunology lab working on cancer immunotherapy, and are focused
on factors that promote an effective antitumor immune response in the solid
tumor microenvironment. Jeff Bluestone is the PI of the lab and is the
CEO/President of the recently formed Parker Institute for Cancer
Immunotherapy.

The student will be working with a postdoc who is a pediatric oncologist on
a model of immunotherapy in pediatric cancers. Specifically, this is a well
defined summer project that involves cloning of cytokine genes into
lentiviral vectors for study in a mouse model of cancer.

We are looking for a highly motivated, independent student, who has
preferably had courses in molecular biology and/or immunology. Students
should be interested in pursuing a graduate career in basic research or
medicine.

Although this position is not paid, there are opportunities for paid full
time positions in the future. This will offer an incredible opportunity to
learn research techniques and be on the cutting edge of cancer therapy
research.
