Global Social Innovation Initiative

The Global Social Innovation Initiative at Berkeley is a newly formed
organization that seeks to develop solutions to social issues relating to
human welfare.
Each academic year, members develop and implement a project focused on a
social issue based on a theme: Public Health, Environmental Sustainability,
Poverty Reduction, Gender Equality, or Education. Before executing a
project, members will conduct research about the chosen topic, collaborate
on project designs, and perform testing trials on the product. All members
will be involved in all phases of each project and will have the
opportunity to implement the project on a wider scale. Members will be
serving the community at large while realizing the potential they have to
impact and change issues confronting society.
This year's topic is energy poverty and we are currently discussing project
ideas. There are other chapters at other universities we can collaborate
with. We are currently looking for new officers and members. For more

Starting Point Mentorship Program

*The Starting Point Mentorship Program is currently recruiting mentors for
the Spring 2016. *

Each semester, the program serves roughly 200 prospective transfer
students, or mentees. Though we can never predict our mentees' academic
interests, we can be certain that they will cover a broad and diverse
intellectual spectrum. By recruiting student mentors from all corners of
our campus, we will help to ensure that the SPMP mentees receive the very
best help available while cultivating meaningful, valuable peer
relationships that will continue to serve them well should they enroll at
Cal.

Mentors will earn 1-2 units for their participation in SPMP during the
semester. But most importantly, the SPMP will also provide mentors with a
unique opportunity to develop their interest to help others and give back
to their community.

Summer 2016 UCSF Pre-Health Undergraduate Program (PUP)

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Clinical and
Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Training Program offers a summer
clinical research training program for 15-18 currently-enrolled
undergraduate students who are planning to attend dental, medical, nursing,
pharmacy or physical therapy professional schools after graduation, and who
have an interest in a career in clinical research. Students will be paired
with a UCSF professional student who is enrolled in the course. The purpose
of the course is to train students to evaluate the medical literature, to
design clinical and translational research studies, and to encourage
long-term collaborations between UCSF and students. Tuition and book are
included if accepted into the program and a $1500 stipend is offered.

Emory University's MD-SEE

Emory University's Office of Summer Programs is pleased to announce MD-SEE,
the MD Summer Experience at Emory, for summer 2016.

Much more than a shadowing program, MD-SEE offers genuine clinical
experience, classroom guidance on presentations, and a vigorous look at
current issues and practices in medicine. This course will cover variable
topics of special interest in the field of Clinical Neurology.
Undergraduates will have an opportunity to correlate experience with actual
patients with the science behind the diagnosis. During their time in the
clinics, students will act as a "patient assistant," helping patients who
may have partial paralysis or loss of sensation. They will learn the basics
of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and will
record patients' history and neurological findings while observing
real-life patient examinations. Each student will be assigned a Clinical
Neurology faculty mentor who will help develop the writing and poster
projects. Publication of student work will be encouraged, co-authored by
the faculty mentor.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students interested in medical school.
I encourage you to please spread the word, forward this email on to
students, post within your department, on bulletin boards around campus,
and steer qualified students toward this program. Attached are two flyers
that can be posted and used as handouts.
*The preferred application deadline is March 1, 2016.*
