I recently purchased the Edirol R-09, but it's still too early for me to give a full review. Initially, the following was recommended to me, but the cost difference was over $100, and I could not afford it:
"...We recommend the new Fostex FR2-LE as the best low-cost machine. It has superior preamps, a key feature. This particular recorder is available for $469 from Full Compass Audio <www.fullcompass.com>, but you must call to obtain this price. If you order over the web the MSRP of $599 is quoted."
