MAJOR DUTIES:
Incumbent is assigned to the National Gallery?s Publishing Office Web team 
and produces, maintains, and validates XHTML pages and multimedia content on 
the Gallery?s Web site by using a Macintosh computer and technical 
guidelines and standards.  Tasks include converting available materials to 
Web compatible graphics or audio files, creating Web page layouts of text 
and images using Dreamweaver and XHTML, determining navigation within 
assigned projects, validating XHTML code, and testing cross-browser and 
cross-platform compatibility.  Converts print publications into Adobe 
Acrobat files according to Gallery technical standards.  Produces images and 
layouts for monthly Web newsletter and assists in scheduling, sending, 
managing address list, bounced mail, and tracking of usage statistics 
provided by external e-mail newsletter service.  Sends, receives, and 
collates digital imaging files as needed to convert to Web graphics.  
Purchases, requisitions, and obtains supplies for the Web office, including 
use of Web purchase card.  Maintains budget records and delivers monthly 
report of expenses to the Web Site Manager.

preparing schedules and monitoring progress.  Ensures that information and 
images are delivered on the site in a timely, accurate manner and that all 
reviews take place, including curatorial, editorial, technical tagging and 
coding, as well as design.  Coordinates and manages a strong working 
relationship with the IT team, Intranet group, and Webmasters, including the 
annual joint preparation of technical requirements and systems 
documentations for the public site.  Oversees day-to-day updating and 
maintenance of content and design of the site, gathering information and 
images from a variety of departments and following through to see that 
updates are delivered in a timely and accurate manner.  Develops support and 
training for in-house contributors and users.  Assists the Chief of Web and 
New Media Initiatives in the evaluation, hiring, and supervision of 
freelance workers as workload requires writers, editors, designers, and 
production personnel.  Provides Chief with budget information for Web site 
operating budget, including annual forecasts for freelance workers, photo 
and permission fees, supplies, travel, and training.  Acts as the deputy to 
Chief of Web and New Media Initiatives as needed.

Supervisory Visual Information Specialist
MAJOR DUTIES:
Incumbent is assigned to the National Gallery?s Publishing Office and is 
responsible for the management and direction of the Gallery?s World Wide Web 
site and for ensuring its future as one of the foremost museum Web sites in 
the world.  Oversees a thorough rebuild and redesign of the Web site 
ensuring not only to meet the needs of its users today but to also 
accommodate future needs, attracting new users to the site, and enabling 
numerous Gallery departments to better carry out their mission through the 
Web site.  Evaluates and hires outside contractors to redevelop the Web site 
and prepares statements of work for contractors and negotiates and oversees 
third-party agreements.  Introduces and coordinates Gallery-wide discussion 
and adaptation of new and multimedia applications for the Web site (e.g., 
videocasting, podcasting, personalization).  Actively engages with 
curatorial departments, education division, press information office, 
library, donor development, retail shops, and other content-providing 
departments to ascertain their needs and expectations for the Web site and 
advise them on developing new interactive content and refreshing existing 
content.  Supervises and fosters creativity of the core Web team, which 
consists of a Web Manager in charge of the daily operation and maintenance 
of the site, two designers/project managers, and a production and 
administrative assistant.  Sets agenda for and chairs semiannual Web 
Advisory Board meetings and serves on Intranet Advisory Board.  Prepares the 
operating budget of the Web site and presents summary reports and requests 
for capital funding to Information Technology Steering Committee.  
Formulates and implements rolling three-year strategic plans for the Web 
site, ensuring the security and integrity of the site.  Assumes lead 
responsibility as the Gallery liaison and spokesperson for the Web both 
internally and internationally in the greater museum and Web publishing 
communities.
