Artstor is seeking a Director of Content Strategy. The Director's primary role will be to develop and implement strategies for facilitating the flow of images and data into the Artstor Digital Library and beyond. Through the cultivation of relationships with local and global artists, museums, archives, and foundations, the Director will work to lower the barriers that prevent content from being included in the Artstor Digital Library and other destinations that serve contributing institutions and users.
Artstor (Artstor.org) is a nonprofit organization that makes available a digital library of more than 1.8 million images designed to enhance education and scholarship in the arts, architecture, the humanities, and sciences. The Artstor Digital Library currently serves more than 1,500 educational institutions and museums worldwide. Artstor also makes available Shared Shelf (sharedshelf.org), a Web-based cataloging and image management software service that allows institutions to catalog, edit, store, and share local collections. As part of Artstor's mission of using digital technologies to further education, scholarship, and research worldwide, the organization collaborates with other institutions in the community to offer a number of other free services, including serving as one of the initial hubs supporting the Digital Public Library of America, and providing free images for academic publications. Responsibilities * Work closely with the President, and with museum staff, scholars, librarians, and others to improve the flow of content from institutional systems and repositories to the Artstor Digital Library and other targets. * Lead the effort in discovering and bringing in strong collections that serve a diverse academic community. * Work closely with the Chief Information Officer and Technology Department to create and implement strategies to enhance our tools and capacity to ingest content. * Lead in setting best practices for the aggregation of content within the organization. * Play a leadership role in the digital content community concerning standards, policies and practices to encourage data flow. * Represent Artstor at conferences and meetings and manage relationships with potential contributors. * Partner with internal teams on the communication and marketing of Artstor's services to contributing institutions. * Lead in preparing proposals for grants for investments in the building of the organization's data management capacity. * Lead and manage contributor communications, metadata management, and the production process. * Participate as part of Artstor's leadership group to set strategy and communicate the aims and mission of the Artstor Digital Library, Shared Shelf, Images for Academic Publication, and other organizational services. The successful candidate will: * Be able to develop processes and make decisions based on understanding Artstor's larger vision and goals. * Have a multi-faceted understanding of and interest in digital content and be dedicated to developing Artstor's role as a value-adding node in the network of content repositories and users of that content. * Have knowledge of digital asset management, collection management, and data infrastructure, and how these systems are used within the Artstor community. * Act as the subject expert on cataloging practices and standards with pragmatic goals in mind. * Be aware of and understand preservation and how it relates to content contributors. * Have the ability to manage an array of relationships with potential contributors and other aggregators. * Have demonstrated experience in the business planning of online educational ventures; be prepared to plan services within a mixed model of free and fee-based services. * Be prepared to develop and implement sustainable planning (including relevant cross-subsidization) for all of Artstor's services. Qualifications & experience * Advanced degree desirable but not required. * Must have a thorough knowledge of the technology systems and data practices employed in the management and networking of images, descriptive metadata, and archival management of primary source material. * Five-years experience in a museum or online digital environment. * Ability to build and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with the Artstor community and potential contributors. * Exceptional communication skills, including writing and public speaking. * Must be highly organized and extremely detail-oriented.
