Artstor is seeking a Director of Content Strategy. The Director's primary role
will be to develop and implement strategies for facilitating the flow of images
and data into the Artstor Digital Library and beyond. Through the cultivation
of relationships with local and global artists, museums, archives, and
foundations, the Director will work to lower the barriers that prevent content
from being included in the Artstor Digital Library and other destinations that
serve contributing institutions and users.

Artstor (Artstor.org) is a nonprofit organization that makes available a
digital library of more than 1.8 million images designed to enhance education
and scholarship in the arts, architecture, the humanities, and sciences. The
Artstor Digital Library currently serves more than 1,500 educational
institutions and museums worldwide. Artstor also makes available Shared Shelf
(sharedshelf.org), a Web-based cataloging and image management software service
that allows institutions to catalog, edit, store, and share local collections.
As part of Artstor's mission of using digital technologies to further
education, scholarship, and research worldwide, the organization collaborates
with other institutions in the community to offer a number of other free
services, including serving as one of the initial hubs supporting the Digital
Public Library of America, and providing free images for academic publications.

Responsibilities
* Work closely with the President, and with museum staff, scholars,
librarians, and others to improve the flow of content from institutional
systems and repositories to the Artstor Digital Library and other targets.
* Lead the effort in discovering and bringing in strong collections that
serve a diverse academic community.
* Work closely with the Chief Information Officer and Technology
Department to create and implement strategies to enhance our tools and capacity
to ingest content.
* Lead in setting best practices for the aggregation of content within
the organization.
* Play a leadership role in the digital content community concerning
standards, policies and practices to encourage data flow.
* Represent Artstor at conferences and meetings and manage relationships
with potential contributors.
* Partner with internal teams on the communication and marketing of
Artstor's services to contributing institutions.
* Lead in preparing proposals for grants for investments in the building
of the organization's data management capacity.
* Lead and manage contributor communications, metadata management, and
the production process.
* Participate as part of Artstor's leadership group to set strategy and
communicate the aims and mission of the Artstor Digital Library, Shared Shelf,
Images for Academic Publication, and other organizational services.
The successful candidate will:

* Be able to develop processes and make decisions based on understanding
Artstor's larger vision and goals.
* Have a multi-faceted understanding of and interest in digital content
and be dedicated to developing Artstor's role as a value-adding node in the
network of content repositories and users of that content.
* Have knowledge of digital asset management, collection management, and
data infrastructure, and how these systems are used within the Artstor
community.
* Act as the subject expert on cataloging practices and standards with
pragmatic goals in mind.
* Be aware of and understand preservation and how it relates to content
contributors.
* Have the ability to manage an array of relationships with potential
contributors and other aggregators.
* Have demonstrated experience in the business planning of online
educational ventures; be prepared to plan services within a mixed model of free
and fee-based services.
* Be prepared to develop and implement sustainable planning (including
relevant cross-subsidization) for all of Artstor's services.

Qualifications & experience
* Advanced degree desirable but not required.
* Must have a thorough knowledge of the technology systems and data
practices employed in the management and networking of images, descriptive
metadata, and archival management of primary source material.
* Five-years experience in a museum or online digital environment.
* Ability to build and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships
with the Artstor community and potential contributors.
* Exceptional communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
* Must be highly organized and extremely detail-oriented.
