I don't think we're going to see any stability in technological storage solutions for a long time, if ever. So I second the support for using hard disks, backup, and off-site storage (of whatever kind--I don't think it's critical the off-site storage be hard disks, it could be tapes or optical). The primary benefits being space usage (we store over a 2 terabytes of data in box about 5" by 19" by 17"), ease of copying to new media (when it comes around), ease of creating backups and storing them off-site, and ease of distribution (people can access the online DB, instead of having to call the "DVD Librarian").

Is there an archive of this email list somewhere? This page--http://www.mcn.edu/eSpectra/forum.html--indicated that there is, or that there will be, but the link it offers is broken. The reason I ask is, we talked about this last month, when Marla Misunas asked

"At SFMOMA we are beginning to archive some large raw image files
(our servers are getting full) and are looking to tap into your
information/experience on the elusive question of which fixed
storage media we should use -- now."

I think there were 5 or 6 responses, and it would be great to be able to send Julian Bermudez a link to that thread.

Thanks,
Matt

    Dear Colleagues:

Do any of you happen to know what are the current and/or newest
options for digital file migration? Meaning, somewhere down the
road, let's say that CD/DVD storage of digital files becomes
obsolete, what seems to be the new form for storing data?
Currently, what are some of the optimum storage systems available?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
