The recent introduction of support for internationalized domain names
in .museum has required modification of the naming conventions. The most
important change is the elimination of the required use of a generic
second-level label. The general form "specific.generic.museum" can't
meaningfully be carried into the IDN environment and it's no longer
appropriate for this form to be mandatory in non-IDN use. The new naming
conventions therefore permit names in the form "specific.museum". Generic
labels are, however, still reserved to support the facility maintained at
http://index.museum/.

The .museum naming conventions are stated at http://about.museum/policy.
Although a date has not been set for the full implementation of the new
policies, the next version of the policy document has been posted for
public review and comment at:

        http://about.museum/policy/policy.ver3.html

There is a companion tutorial document, also for public review at:

        http://about.museum/naming/naming.ver2.html

The terms of introduction of two-label names have not been finalized and
the date for the full implementation of the new policies cannot be fixed
until they have. There will be some form of "sunrise" during which current
name holders will be given privileged access to names that they might have
acquired if the new policies had been in effect earlier.
