Actually, you don't even need the additional domain name. You can have FTP requests directed to a separate server at ftp.seattleArtMuseum.org by your ISP,. The ISP can also very likely provide the server space for a small monthly fee. A web page with thumbnails could then link to the images on that external server after a password was entered.

Providing temporary and permanent logins and passwords might be the more difficult part, as it requires admin access to the FTP server. I would talk to the ISP about that. If the ISP (or IT dept) has to change the passwords, one approach might be to have one set of permanent passwords and one set that changes every month.

Good luck.

Your IT staff is absolutely correct and has every right to be nervous. So, get another Address ... www.seattleartmuseum.info ! $40 per year. Locate it on an offsite ISP that will offer you a web based maintenance interface. $19.95+- per month! Set up a rudimentary website for the photos using FrontPage/Dreamweaver. Tell the ISP you need 'Guest Logon' for the FTP portion of the site. Have at it! Keeps everybody away from your servers so your IT department is happy, accomplishes the job that your PR Staff needs it to do, and the cost is nothing compared to the efficiency.

Good Luck!

Subject: FTP alternative

Hello,
We have had a longstanding request to build a FTP site for our PR department.  Our IT staff does not like FTP because of security issues. Is there an alternative? Do any of you have software/tool recommendations? We are a Windows shop.

FYI -- here are some of the requirements:
PR staff can assign temporary and permanent log in and passwords
PR staff can post and delete files
-- they would like a web interface so the press can see thumbnails

I am wondering how other museum IT/New Media shops deal with these requests.

Thank you.
