Title: RE: SIG for small museums?

Hi Rob et al,

It could be that many MCN members who are staff at small museums may not be subscribers to this list serve so a better gauge of support may be to hold a meeting at the conference. I will compile a list of names and send out another message closer to the conference date. If you or anyone else has any suggestions as to how to gather more names of possible participants other than this list serve, please let me know. If there appears to be some interest from a few more individuals I will definitely put myself forward as a prospective chair for the SIG.

As for Ann’s question as to the definition of a small or medium sized museum, art gallery or archives, I don’t think that it needs to be rigidly defined at this point. It is often a relative term and it may be one thing in the context of MCN members and another in terms of all museums which are currently operating. It may suffice that if you think you are a small institution, then a small museum SIG would be applicable.

Hi all,

This does sound like a great idea for a new SIG--I'd join in a minute!

David, might you be up for pulling together a meeting in Minneapolis (coordinating logistics with Marla) and in gathering names of interested MCN members in advance?

If there's enough interest and someone (hint, hint) would like to step up as prospective SIG chair, I'd be delighted to bring the proposal to the board. A chair doesn't necessarily have to be an expert in all areas a SIG addresses; most important is a real interest in the subjects at hand--and the motivation to spur topical discussions, foster involvement, and catalyze a SIG-sponsored conference panel or two each year. If this sounds interesting and anyone has further questions, please feel free to contact me on- or off-list, as you wish.

best regards,

Rob

Hi all,

Firstly, are there many subscribers to this list serve who are both MCN members and work in what may reasonably be considered a small or medium sized museum, gallery or archives? If so, do you think that there should be a small museum Special Interest Group? Or at the very least an informal discussion at the MCN conference in Minneapolis.

In the context of my own work situation some of my own concerns centre around keeping up on trends in terms of new technologies pertinent to museums. I'm sure that others may have other issues which relevant to smaller institutions with limited resources.
