Richard, The LC site:
Format Descriptions for Still Images http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/stage/formats/fdd/still_fdd.shtml carries a description for DNG_1_1, Adobe Digital Negative (DNG), Version 1.1 LC has not listed vendor specific Camera Raw formats probably because there are so many and little documentation. There is the caveat on this page as follows: "General notes about still image formats are provided by Still Image Quality and Functionality Factors. The descriptions listed on this page provide specific information about individual file formats, file-format classes, bitstream structures and encodings, and the mechanisms used to compress files or bitstreams. Inclusion of a format does not imply that it is preferred or acceptable for Library of Congress collections. Conversely, omission of a format from the list does not imply that it is not preferred or acceptable. Descriptions will be drafted and added over time. Persons with specialized knowledge are encouraged to review and comment on the descriptions using this contact form." It would be great if you could keep MCN-L informed if there is anything new or interesting about RAW workflows discussed at PMA. I believe that we need to persistently encourage the camera vendors to support Adobe's DNG. thanks, Alan -----Original Message----- From: Richard Anderson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Fri 1/27/2006 8:07 AM To: [email protected] Cc: Subject: RE: Original digital photog standards? > Marisa, > > Please see www.UPDIG.org > > Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines > > This is an inter-organization initiative of digital photographic = > agencies (ASMP), archivists (SAA), stock houses (Getty Images), = > photoresearchers (ASPP), camera mfrs (Sinar,Canon), academics (RIT) > and = > software vendors (Microsoft,Adobe) who are identifying common basic = > practices across disciplines. > > It's very much a fledgling work-in-progress but there are some very > good = > ideas on the public web site.=20 > > I represent MCN to this group and I expect to report back and > listen to = > the MCN community at the national meeting in Pasadena. When UPDIG was originally put together, the focus was on preserving digital image quality as files were transferred or reproduced. Some original UPDIG Board members did not think it was UPDIG's mission to promote open documentation of RAW files, so we came out in support of a standard RAW format such as .DNG. I do see UPDIG moving in the direction of supporting both a standard RAW format AND open documentation. I will be attending the I3A panel discussion on the RAW file situation at PMA Feb 27. Any thoughts you all might have for me to take to that discussion would be appreciated. I went to this site: <<http:// www.digitalpreservation.gov/formats/fdd/descriptions.shtml>> But see no mention of RAW files. Is that an oversight? Or do these folks not know about RAW files?
