So from one problem, you've deduced that your Sony product is a piece of
crap.

I don't know why I bother venting, but I will anyway.

Just because something is 1 month old and has experienced just one problem,
you immediately write it off and wish for another brand and model as a
result. I've only got one question to ask:

Why the hell do manufacturers give out warranties for? Because sh_t happens!

If it happened to an Aiwa unit, would you wish you had the Sharp instead?
You've got a warranty for a good reason, I suggest you use it and then draw
your conclusions. Personally, I think it may not have liked that one disc.
Who knows? You may need to see if it repeats itself again so that way you
can be certain it's a recurring fault and not something that would lead the
serviceman to believe that your unit is fine.

Adios,
LarZ

ooh gosh, why did I buy this one?! :)

A few days ago, my brand new (1 moth old) MZ-R55 exhibited a 'DISC ERR'
message after not
being able to read an MD for a minute, (an MD which I use regularly, and
never had problems with before)

A few minutes after, I attempted the read again, with the same disc, and
it works since.

I'd appreciate any commends on this.

In conclusion I should have got the new Aiwa 'eh..
