Hi Wendy,

You're actually the second person to ask this question recently but the answer
is simply that you recorded in mono. Mono recordings contain a single audio
channel while stereo contain two (left & right), so mono recordings take only
half as much disc space as stereo ones do.

Your 74min disc allows a maximum of 74m59s stereo which translates to
149m58s mono recording. The extra 59 seconds (or 1m58s mono) I've
stated above is to allow for "lost fragments" which is a quite different topic.

I guess you'll find a small 2-position slider switch on your MD deck to select
either Mono or Stereo recording, all portables I've seen default to Stereo and
you have to switch it to Mono recording each time desired. When it comes
to playback all decks and portables will always play in the correct mode and
the Stereo / Mono recording switch is irrelevant then.

If you're using something like the Sony JE520, you may also want to check
the 3-position input selector to ensure you're not recording analog instead
of digital (coax or optical).

Hope that helps,
