I use the CSB Binaural mics with my Sony MZ-R50 and the results are
excellent. The mics possess a nice flat frequency response which means I
don't really need to EQ in some cases (unless the venue was deadening or
booming the sound) during post-production on my PC. When recording, even
though they're meant to be pointed sideways (like your ears), I point them
towards the sound source (namely, the stage).

As for recording time, the MZ-R50 should be the one with the longer
recording time. Besides, you'll never find yourself swapping batteries
considering that unless you're at Woodstock, gigs don't go for longer than 3
hours which is ample given that the MZ-R50 exploits a recording time of 4
hrs on the Li-Ion battery alone. If you want duration, either get a 2nd
battery, or otherwise, get a couple of Energizer Lithium AA's and you can
get a total recording time of at least 22 hours!

But believe me, even though I always keep a spare Li-Ion battery on hand,
I've never had to use it in any of my recordings.

In short, the CD's I've produced from my live recordings have been mistaken
for professional releases, and that says a lot to me. Personally, I think
the CSB - Sony combo is a killer. Go for it!

Adios,
LarZ

Subject: MD: tapers experience with SONY-MD and CSB mics

hi all,

i was thinking of getting myself a taping set-up. for microphones i want to
use the CSB (core-sounds binaureal) mics (the standard version, not low or
high end). also, i first thought of getting a DAT recorder, but because of
the price i have decided to go for MD after all. now, before i really
purchase this, i really would like to know if any1 here already has
experience with this set-up, and if so, is it any good? the equipment i was
thinking of buying was (as mentioned) the CSB and a SONY MZ-R50. i'm not
really a crack on MD equipment, so maybe someone could suggest a better deck
than the MZ-R50? what's the exact difference between the R35 and the R50
anyway, besides the fact that the 50 is smaller? looking at the manual, the
50 also has less recording/play time...
