Most people I know prefer Debian over any other distro. I used to run
Debian 1.3 on my machine at home which was nice, but I recently switched
over to Redhat 6 (it was the only CD I had on me at the time), 6.1 is out
soon as well. Mandrake is essentially Redhat with a few extras.

Heh, I havn't compiled a new kernal for a while now, usually you only need
to do that if you want extra hardware support, or are upgrading to a newer
kernal (which sometimes come as packages from your distro),
ftp://updates.redhat.com for example have rpms of newer kernals (from
memory) that you can download and simply go:
# rpm --upgrade kernal-whatever.rpm
