Hi,
I guess most of us here are highly intelligent guys (?) so I thought
I'd throw this question to you. It is sorta relevant as more processor
power helps with MP3 crunching.
I want to overclock my CPU, but using the BIOS setup option to
increase the bus speed causes my sound card to fail (a Creative
SB Live Player 1024 PCI). My processor is a K6-3/400 which
has a 100MHz bus.
Even the first level of overclocking (112mhz cpu/37mhz pci) causes
sound lockup, let alone 124/41 or 133/44mhz. To say I'm a bit
disappointed with the (brand new) soundcard is an understatement.
So I was wondering, given my motherboard supports CPU speeds
up to 500MHz, what would happen if I set a jumper on the m/bd to
the 450MHz setting (100/33 bus as it is now in BIOS, but a 4.5x
multiplier for the cpu core?) Does the CPU internally generate
the multiplied clock or use whatever the m/bd supplies?
It shouldn't overheat at any rate-- the system temp settles at about
31 degC, and the CPU at 41 degC-- this in a room which itself is
about 27 degC anyway (I like it hot, except when the electric bill
falls through the letterbox. And the floor :-)
So if any of you know whether my CPU or m/bd is likely to go up
in smoke by changing the jumpers to that for the k6-3/450, pls
let me know, or direct me to any info on the net about overclocking.
Of course if the 450mhz setting works, you don't need to be a
genius to know i'll be tempted to go for 500mhz :-)
Tnx in advance,
