That's probably because the bass was so damn much it was distorting at the
analogue stage's input!
Sounds like you need a high pass filter (or otherwise termed as a bass
roll-off filter) to help cut down the amount of bass getting to your
recorder.
Personally, I haven't recorded a rock gig, particularly a large concert, so
I can't say but at this stage, of all the recordings I've made with my Sony
R50 and Core Sound binaurals (not the budget set), I've rarely had to do
anything with the bass in terms of boost or cut.
Just depends on the equipment and how it's been set up. I always set my
recording level to something conservative so that I can then boost later on
the PC if necessary. That way, I guarantee no distortion.

i recorded a concert tonight on my 722, and 95% of the songs, the ones that
had heavy base were not recorded satisfactorily. ATRAC could not handle
heavy base: all parts with base sound like digital noise, which completely
drowned out all other frequency bands.
