It was Rick Woudenberg, I believe, who posted here some time ago that pre-
mastered MDs are recorded with "ATRAC aleph-null" as he called it: because
the compression does not have to be done in real time (let alone one fourth
of real time as on the MXD-D3), it can be done as well as possible within
the specifications of ATRAC. Therefore premastered MDs ought to show less
effect from compression than even the most current real-time ATRAC algo-
rithms.
