The MZ-1 was released along with a play-only portable called the MZ-2P, if I
am not mistaken. (In fact, I have the original promotional brochure by Sony
... somewhere in my mess of a bedroom.) The nomenclature did not make much
sense, so Sony was smart enough to change it for future generations of the
MD product line....
