Can anyone help explain why I can't seem to record digitally from a Dolby
source? I have encountered two situations where I cannot make a recording
digitally and they both involve sources that are Dolby. First, with my
Yamaha DS-XG audio card which has optical in and out, if I turn on Dolby
digital for the card using the control panel, my Sony MZ-R50 starts flashing
"NO COPY" even when an SCMS-stripping box is in the line and activated.
Turning the Dolby option off will clear the "NO COPY" display and the
recorder will begin recording again. Second, with a Sony SAT-A50 DirecTV
receiver that provides an optical digital output, I get the same behavior
when trying to record the audio from a program that is listed in the guide
as having a Dolby soundtrack. In both cases, regular digital sources can be
recorded directly without problems.
I've also tried both of the above using a Sony MDS-S37 deck. The only
difference is that the deck just sits there as if there was no input at all.
Normally, for a protected source, this deck with display "Cannot Copy." I
know that it is seeing some kind of signal because the "Din Unlocked"
display disappears when the source is present.
What's the deal with the Dolby source causing the "NO COPY" on the R50? Is
there some kind of additional copy protect beyond the SCMS? Or is it that
the Dolby signal is somehow different and the MD recorder just can't read it
properly? If the latter is true, what options do I have for making a
digital recording of the source?
Baffled,
Paul
