I don't know if this will add much data to the search for the cause of the
sound but I can try.

I sent the WAV file through a filter set to pass only the signals above
10kHz. The result is complete silence except for the tone. Viewed in a
spectrum analyser, a clear peak is visible that cycles nice and smoothly
between 15kHz and 17kHz and back, with a period of about four seconds over
and over for the duration of the recording.

I was playing because four important things all came together today: I
bought a new sound card, bought an amp with four digital ins and two outs,
bought excellent shielded bookshelf speakers for my computer, and downloaded
the demo of CoolEdit2000. Of course I'm going to play! If anyone is
interested, Zach's WAV file modified as described above can be had at
http://www.alienshore.com/md_mystery_noise.wav. Be careful though...my ears
hurt before I knew how loud I'd turned it up. The lack of background noise
is deceiving. You've been warned...I take no responsibility for damage to
ears or tweeters or anything you may or may not own. :-)

Rick.
