** This does get onto MD eventualy ;) **
Hya,
>The subject says it all: am I the only person in the world -- or even
>here -- that hates MP3?
Nope, I don't like it, although I've kept quite.
>I mean, yes, it has definite advantages, such as
>trying out music or getting it free by downloading; but I hate having to
>depend on my computer so much. I think that a music medium shouldn't be
>so tied in to computers.
Well I suppose I like it and I don't. I'm with you with the ease of
getting music for free (god, I haven't brought an album in months),
also transfering music to other people it's good.
I'm only 18, so my ears arn't to damaged yet (I don't go to many night
clubs). The difference between MD and MP3 is clear.
>I don't mind MP3 as long as it keeps its place: behind MD and CD.
>Portable MP3 seem stupid to me because ... well, it's tough to explain.
>It just seems so much easier and smarter to just transfer MP3s to MD (or
>CD). To me, that's the only reason it should be used -- and not as a
>stand-alone medium. It's so computer-intensive!
Hehe, yeah it is computer instensive, but then again there are
somethings that you can only do with computer music. For example, we
have a small FM transmitter ('bout 800m radius (clear listening)), we
use kJukeBox to play MP3's (it runs on KDE on Linux). The reason we do
is it will mix the tracks, which makes it sound good ;). Continous
music, no adverts, 'part from out signature tune ;).
Now you couldn't do that with a MD, there just isn't the capacity
there. I think that MP3 is good for when you need massis' of music, so
that you don't have to do anything to it while it's running.
On another note, I don't perticulary like the way the music industry
is developing either, I saw the news this morning when I got up... EMI
and Time Warner joining... EMI is the biggest music compnay in the
UK...
Now it seems to much of a coinsidence that Time Warner joined with AOL
recently, it just seems a bit suspect. It's obviously going to try and
push selling music over the internet.
This is going to encourage more things like MP3, which will
*eventually* fade out MD and CD's.... But there is one thing wrong....
How do most people take music from the computer and listen to it else
where? also what sort of quality are we to expect?
I mean, I would *not* be prepared to pay 13 for 128kbs or even 160kbs
MP3's when I could get full CD quality for the same. And the fact is
that the companies will try and keep the price the same....
While I'm on the subject of the internet, we hear all this excited
talk about movies on the internet and pick one, and view it.... I mean
come on!
Say that it develops and TV's become inet enabled (they are now :),
what if half of America on Sunday afternoon decided to start to watch
say The Matrix (cool film BTW, with a 74Min TDK MD?) off the net......
what would happen?
I'll tell you, the net would collapse instantly (well maybe not, but
no data would flow). The net would not be able to take that much data
all at once.... but let's look at it realisistically, inet movies are
a long way off, I think cable will get that share. So there's one
worry out of the window.
Back to MP3 and MD. Chargable MP3 (or any type) won't take off well at
the *start*, esp. with those people who like quality, there just isn't
the technology for it yet.
I mean, at ISDN (128) it would take over 5 hours to get a full CD's
worth of data, who is going to sit there and do that??? I sure as hell
won't.
So until technology advances (**ALOT**) I don't think that quality
internet music will pose a threat normal mediums....
If Sony pulled their figures out of their arogent ass and saw that
they could adapt MD to store MP3's they would be in a gold mine! If
they increased the transfer speed of MD, they could store MP3's on MD
relativly quicky, also if they made them for 640Mb MD's as well...
wow, I'd buy one (although I don't like MP3).
Think about it, I'd pay 4 for a 650Mb MD, for over eight hours of
music on it in MP3. Sharp had a good idea, but wrong form. It needs to
actually store the MP3's as MP3's.
But I can here people screaming that I'm looking at this from a
non-profesional (audio) point of view, yeah, to right..... Do you
think that any serious company is going to use MP3 to record music in
(other to distrubute over the net)? Nope.
As normal, I think we can safly say that Sony arn't gonna do a wet
slap about MP3+MD... although I would like to be suprised. I do agree
with the original poster (but because this has got so long I can't
remember his/her name).....
I mean at the moment, I've got my Sharp 722 pluged into my amp and I'm
listening to music that was once MP3. And, no, for general listening
it doesn't matter that there isn't some of the quaility there.
But there are times when I like to listen to music just for the
quality.... Okey, MP3 VBR is actually very good, my dad can't tell the
difference between that and CD, but I can.
I heard that too! I know that it depends on what bit-rate you use. But
if you use 200 or so (forgot the actual multiple), your size comes
right up and we get back to the downloading of it, we're looking at
this from the selling on the net point of view remember.
If I'm creaing MP3's, I'll do it on VBR 160, 'cos it sounds okey to
listen to. But if it's quality I want then, it's straight from CD to
MD optically.
Okey, I think this rant has go on long enough, I'm not gonna read it
back because it'll probably make no sense ;) Please feel free to
comment on it, via the list or personnally, BUT please DONT just reply
to agree, reply to say something. Sorry for the only occasional bit on
MD. Now I've read it (I know I said I wasn't gonna), and it sounds a
fair arguement, I'd probably get an B+ at college ;).
Now, if anyone is into MUD's contact me, I need beta testers ;)...
Peter.
