As I said before, this is pretty much ideal for me in a small uni room. I
don't have a separate lounge to put my hifi in so I bring a separates amp
and tuner, speakers and my portable MD recorder and Discman, along with a
small box of MDs and smallish rack of CDRs.
I come home for Xmas, Easter and summer - 6 moves a year. Thus I cut right
down on the amount of A/V stuff I take away with me. I don't bring a TV,
but use a TV card instead and have a DVD-ROM drive for watching movies.
When I'm at home I have my hifi in my bedroom (along with my PC) and run a
longer audio cable to it for when I can't be bothered with getting up every
45mins to swap CDs.
It's pretty much ideal for my situation - if I wasn't moving so much I'd
stick my PC off in a separate room and get a "proper" solution for my
lounge.

Through a good soundcard with a reasonable soundcard and well-ripped 160 or
192k MP3s it's fine - though I don't have space for my stands so one
speaker sits on a shelf, the other next to the amp, which doesn't give
brilliant sound anyway.
My dad uses a jukebox-type CD player. They're OK if you keep them indexed
(so you know what's where), but as soon as you fill it up you're having to
faff about swapping discs - having some in the player, some on the shelf. I
find even the 3-6 disc multiplayers annoying, having to swap discs about in
one of the big toastrack ones would drive me nuts.
I think PC-based DVD watching is pretty lame as well, but again I just
don't have the space (either here or on the journey) for a proper player
and a TV.
