Roland made a device a few years ago that took digital audio signals and
mixed
them to produce a stereo digital signal. Instead of the traditional
"pan-pots" for
L to R, it also had controls for elevation and front-to-back. It would
allow you
to place sources, for exmaple, above the speakers, behind the listener,
outside
the speakers, etc. You had to have *really* phase coherent speakers for it
to work right, but it was a neat effect. I have a Suzanne Ciani CD that
uses it
on a few tracks.
