Hi James,

I suggest that you leave the MD deck permanently connected to the CD.

Why?
1) Each time you disconnect the optical cable, you'll 'damage' the cable
   and connectors. In the end you'll end up with one of them badly
   damaged.
2) An optical connection is the most save connection in the world. If your
   CD player would put 10000V on one of it's outputs, nothing will happen
   to your MD-deck. (You'll probably kill your amplifier and everything
   connected to it!)
