James Jarvie asked,
| My question: Would it hurt anything to leave the
| optical cable connected permanently between the CD
| deck and the MD deck? It would be a real pain to have
| to connect them up every time I wanted to record.
As Ralph Smeets and Simon Barnes have already answered, it's not only safe,
it's preferable to unplugging and replugging them all the time. I have
several optical cables that I leave permanently connected between units.
Just be sure that the cable is not squeezed, stretched, pulled tightly around
corners, kinked, nor coiled more tightly than a 5-cm diameter. Also, it is a
good idea to keep the cable's dust caps and the decks' dust plugs in a safe
place for those occasions (repair, transport, whatever) when you will want to
disconnect the cables. [When I've taken decks in for repair, I've kept the
dust plugs at home and just put masking tape across the optical jacks, not
trusting the repair facility to return the dust plugs.] If your cable's dust
caps are on plastic rings that stay around the cable, then it's no problem
for the caps (although I did have one of those rings break on one cable).
