I did my final year project on audio compression using perceptual encoding
(such as ATRAC, MP3, PASC etc..). I wrote my own audio compression
algorithm. I sold it to my supervisor as being "something new" by making it
variable bitrate (back when vbr mp3s were unheard of- not that they're that
common now). I did a CS/psychology joint honours degree tho, so I knew all
the perceptual side of hearing type stuff (masking effects and stuff). So i
also sold it as a joint honours project by doing listening tests (mp3 vs my
algorithm vs uncompressed). Didn't have time to do md(ATRAC) tests
unfortunately. Was quite a fun project though, and i managed to produce many
programs that made music sound like it was being performed underwater before
coming up with the final version :).

Good Luck :)
