Before I begin: These arguments are not necessarily my arguments - since you
asked, I thought I should summarize them.
In case you haven't heard of it, there's an entire Anti-MD website in Japan.
With the way MD is in Japan, it's really compressing the market share of
other formats(cassettes, DAT), and they just don't think this should happen.
But anyway...
The major criticism of MD is that it sounds unusually "weightless". Some
people who are used to CD finds MD equipments dont sound substantial enough.
There's a tendency for the sound to be extremely bright on MD equipments.
This is described as a "hard" sound (as opposed to supple). It's very nice,
but can also be tiring to listen to.
Another aspect is that, people think that on some tracks MD sounds "noisy"
if there are several "layers" of sound (instruments) appearing together.
Maybe is it true that ATRAC creates "pre-echo noise" (noise that precedes
the actual sound being compressed), but again I can't comment on that.
---------------------------
Personally, I'd like to hear what people think about the first criticism I
mentioned above. It's perfectly possible for any audio equipment to be tuned
like that, but you hardly ever hear a CD or cassette portable that sounds
"light" in the same way. So a reasonable question is: why do they tune MD
portables like this?
And please, don't give us the double blind test crap. That doesn't solve any
questions. Are you blind? *g*
Leon
P.S. Sony EX70 can be very nice if you own a Panasonic portable. Makes the
sound very pleasant. It doesnt sound like something that goes well with Sony
portables.
