During the development of MD, it was clear that a disc that is only 1/5th of
the size of a CD can only hold about 1/5th of the information. Thus Sony came
up with a clever compression algorithm.

This algorithm is called ATRAC and it's an algorithm based on:
'What a normal human being can't hear doesn't need to be stored'
Ie, the algorithm has a model of the human ear and trows away all sounds that
can't be heard by the human ear.

ATRAC 1, was the first and Sony probably put out to soon. Well, they had to
since Philips was marketing DCC. Results, most human beings can hear the
differences between a CD and ATRAC 1.

Sony has worked hard on ATRAC, but it took up to ATRAC 3.5 until they got
it right. It is still hearable if you know what to look for, and some
sounds are known to give problems, but for most people MD (ATRAC 3.5 or greater)
sounds like CD.
