"The Rio and Sony Stick are toys. With the cost of the memory cards needed
for them, you can't build up a library of albums..."
I 100% agree with this point. The flash memory for MP3 devices
restricts you from making a library. But then again, this is irrelevant in
the reflection of today's pop culture. Some of us, mainly i think everyone
on the md-l list, enjoy good music and want to collect everything we love. I
am only 20 but I enjoy a lot of Aerosmith and U2 stuff from before my time.
I also like today's punk like NOFX and Strung Out. But let's look at who is
buying MP3 players in the first place (or who is having their mommys and
daddies buy them). We are talking about kids who barely have the attention
span to listen through the new Britney Spears song. We are talking about
teenage girls who say 'Daddy can you get me one of those things that lets me
listen to the music from the internet?' and 'Can I have the credit card
again daddy there is another sale at the gap?!' (followed by pouting and
puppy dog eyes). Here, we are all adults. We say, 'Have you seen the Sony
MZ-E7W?? It has a bi-directional frequency mechanism so you can view track
titles from your watch!!' or 'MiniDisco's got a wicked deal on the MXD-D3
home deck! And they throw in a few discs!' We are concerned with different
stuff here. We know about Sony's development of ATRAC Type R. We know about
AGC and the joint text between MZ-R91 and Discmans. We are more
sophisticated. We use TOSLink optical cables.
MP3 players are for idiots. They plug em in 'that little square plug thing
on the back of the computer box thing'. So there is no comparison to make
between the RIO 500 and the R91, etc. It would be like comparing apples to
oranges, idiots to, well, us!

I can see it now, this one is gonna stir up a LOT of controversy... hehehe.
