As Mike Burger has pointed out, the lemon clause of the extended service plan
lets you get full credit for the original purchase price toward anything of
equal or *greater* value; you can get a refund only in the first thirty days
after the purchase.
| However, all that the Best Buys around me here in Houston are selling
| now are JE330s and CD/MD combos, which I am not interested in.
I was in the exact same position when they lemoned out my 510. They told me
that I could use the credit toward anything in the store, or any collection
of things in the store, as long as the post-tax total equaled or exceeded
the post-tax value of the lemon credit. Perhaps that was allowed only be-
cause they no longer sold anything comparable to the lemoned item (they ac-
knowledged that a JE330 was not a replacement), but -- and I specifically
asked -- I could have used it all on [prerecorded audio] CDs if I wanted.
So I bought a CD-RW drive, some blank data CDRs and CD-RWs, a couple printer
cartridges, and a ream of paper. Had I had more sense I'd have bought an
external CD-RW drive instead, since as soon as I got home with the internal
one it became clear that installing it would be a case of biting off more
than I could chew. I went right back and traded the internal drive plus some
cash for an external one; had I bought an external one when I was using the
lemon credit I wouldn't have had to add all those other things to use the en-
tire credit at one ring-up, but in retrospect they were things I'd be using
anyway, so it really wasn't money wasted, all the boxes of CD media and the
ream of paper have been opened and started already, and the ink-jet cart-
ridges will be put to use within the next few months.
| My question is the following: Is there anything I can do?
You can find other things at Best Buy that total to at least the price of the
510 (surely you didn't pay $400; they never charged more than $299.99 for it)
and content yourself that maybe these things aren't worth that much to you,
but they're worth more than you'd get for a used unit in good functioning
order after you'd owned it all this time.
