In response to the replies to my original posting (not just Rick's)...
OK, now I've seen that part of the circuit maybe I can explain my somewhat
simplistic view (I did learn some electronics about 10 years ago but never
used what I learnt).
In a really simple circuit, say a battery across which is a lamp. The lamp
will glow at a particular brightness. Now before the battery goes flat,
stick a resistor across the battery - the lamp goes dimmer as current is
being used by the resistor, which is therefore not available to the lamp.
The way I see it, the analogue stage in the MiniDisc player is like the bulb
(it is dependant on power at a particular voltage and current being
available to sound a particular way), the optical and co-axial inputs are
like putting two different resistors across the supply. I know this is very
much an over simplification - but hopefully it tells you how I'm thinking.
I'm not talking about effecting the digital signals, but how power supplied
to the analogue circuit could be effected and therefore how the MiniDisc
output could sound different.
Optical in is using IC621, co-axial is not - this is something I did not
know. Therefore different loads are being demanded from the power supply
depending on the input type used, this raises the possibility of effecting
(in some small way) the power available to the analogue amp.
I suppose differing demands by the MiniDisc spindle motor my also effect the
power available to the analogue circuitry.
I know a few people who cannot hear a difference between analogue and
digital MiniDisc recordings, but it's down to what they are using to listen
to the discs. When they take their discs into a HiFi dealer or play them on
my system they are rather surprised at the difference, and indeed even that
a difference existed!
It doesn't mean that they should re-record all their minidiscs, or buy a new
HiFi system if they are happy with what they have.
I also think the difference would go away if I was using an external DAC (as
no analogue amplification would be carried out in the MiniDisc player), but
I'm happy using the co-ax inputs so wont waste my money buying one.

Subject: RE: MD: Co-ax v's Optical (must read).
On http://www.minidisc.org/je520_service/47.html it shows that the
optical and coax digital interfaces combine to a single lead very near
the outer edge of the MD's entire circuit. From here the entire
recording path is digital, with no memory of whether it came from from
coax or optical inputs.
How, on playback, would the analog circuitry be effected by whether
the recording source was coax or optical?
Rick
