Hey everyone on the list. It's been a long while
since I've written to you all, but I still read all
the digests.

I bought a MZ-R30 over 3 years for the deep discount
price of $400. It's been a great unit, but I figured
it was time for an upgrade. So I got a Sharp MD-MS722
from Mercata.com for $133.75. I got it a few days ago
and only used it to play (which worked fine) and
tonight I tried to record with it for the first time.
It doesn't record anything but dead silence on the
disc. It acts as if it is recording, but when you
play it back you have nothing but silence. Then when
you hit stop again to save the TOC you get the
patented Sharp UTOC Error. My best guess is that the
magnetic head on the top of the disc isn't working, so
the laser is heating the disc to it's currie point,
and all molecules are orienting the same way
accounting for the silence.

I'm going to call Mercata tomorrow and whine at them
or bitch at Sharp if Mercata doesn't want to play
ball. I just thought I'd let you all know of the poor
quality of this Sharp unit. I've bought piles and
piles of electronic and computer stuff and this is
only the 2nd thing ever that I got that was broken out
of the box. My Sony MZ-R30 still works after falling
onto concrete several times, flying out of a moving
golf cart onto asphalt, and several other interesting
things. The Sharp on the other hand was broken out of
the box. I know which one is higher quality.

I think it goes without saying that I won't be buying
another Sharp MD unit anytime in the future.

Seth
