For the longest time we sold Mitsubishi MDs. Yes the same company that makes
the cars used to also make MDs. We were able to get them at such prices that we
broke price barriers,
There packaging was not fancy. But their cases were strong and we never had any
returns on them. Actually with the exception of one or two odd balls, we never
had any returns on any of the blanks we sold.
We never sold Memorex. Probably the main reason is that our distributor was in
Japan and all of the discs we sold had to be made in Japan.
I remember Kao's. They had great jackets and labels. The cases were the flip
top ones and the disc came in assorted colors with a free case holder. As far
as I know, Blazer is the only company that makes the machines that make MDs.
Rick W. had an interview with them a while back. Hopefully it is still
somewhere on the Community Page archives. A lot of interesting fact and things
I never knew. Like the first 1000 discs from the start of a new batch are the
highest quality.
But the owner of Blazer was quick to add that you will never hear the
difference.
I really wonder about what someone mentioned regarding Sonys very high end CD
players and MD decks. Would the improvement be that drastic?
I know that the converters are far superior. But is the laser also so much
better? I'm sure that shielding and power transformers etc. are much better on
them too. But since no one is complaining about hum, I don't know if that
matters.
In a direct CD to MD digital copy, there is no converter involved. So the laser
and the transport are the main things that would have any affect. Is the ATRAC
chip superior? Can an ES actually produce a better quality encoding then
something of equal ATRAC version??
Doesn't seem like it to me. Besides the superior converters, what do you really
get on an ES to warrant paying so much more (not counting bell and whistles)?
Also, what is a variable coefficient digital filter? I know it is on the out
put end.
