| OK, but who "created them". For example Sony and the MD. Or was this a
| collaboration of a bunch of companies borrowing from existing technologies.

Everything about DVD has been a collabarative effort, in spite of several
attempts to hijack it -- DivX anyone?

| I have mentioned that regarding the DVD on the list before. The CD is
| obvious now. But don't forget that the CD has been around much longer
| then the MD and did not catch on for several years. Why the MD has never
| really made is is still mystery to me.

Mostly because Sony never really marketed it.

| To me the DCC failure is obvious. It sucks.

DCC failed because Philip really never marketed it, *and* because it has
all the limitations of CD-DA combined with all the limitations of streaming
tape.

| I have stated here in the past that, "In the relatively short time DVDs
| have been out, they have probably already sold more DVD players than
| either MD recorders or players combined.

Ummm... substitute "CD players" for "MD recorders or players combined" and
you wou would be pretty close to accurate. In the past three years, DVD
has surpassed CD-DA's 12-year accomplishment. DVD-Video (the correct term)
has the fastest adoption rate of any consumer technology ever.

| Whoa!! big word there!! I'm not sure that is the correct word to use
| there, but lets not start a debate about it-it's no big deal.

Antithetical, from the word "thesis" meaning a position or proposition whch
a person advances and offers to maintain, or which is actually maintained
by argument. The word I used is correct.

| All I am saying is that if there is something in a "new format" that
| infringes upon any of the specifications protected by patent on the DVD,
| that would be a problem.

Patents are not the issue, because the DVD specs are open. The DVD marks
themselves are protected by the DVD Consortium. If someone came along and
devised a proprietary medium using DVD media in some fashion, they would
*NOT* be able to use the DVD marks or use the initials DVD or the term
"Digital Versatile Disc". Not being able to call it "Mini-DVD" would
seriously hinder market adoption -- DivX anyone?
